The 49ers just landed one of the NFL’s most dangerous interior pass rushers, and the man behind the helmet carries a story worth knowing.

In March 2026, the San Francisco 49ers acquired defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa from the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for a 2026 third-round draft pick.

For a franchise that had desperately needed to upgrade its interior pass rush, the move was exactly the kind of decisive offseason action 49ers fans had been waiting for.

Almost immediately after the trade broke, a different question started trending: What ethnicity is Osa Odighizuwa? Here’s the full story.

Osa Odighizuwa Ethnicity: Nigerian Roots, American Identity

Osa Odighizuwa is of Nigerian descent. Born with American nationality, he has deep West African roots, passed down by both parents, who emigrated from Nigeria before starting their family in the United States.

His full name, Osawaru Odighizuwa, tells the story before you even read a word of his biography. Osawaru is a distinctly Nigerian given name, while the Odighizuwa surname traces back to the Edo people of the Benin Kingdom in southern Nigeria, one of West Africa’s most historically significant civilizations.

Born on August 13, 1998, in Dayton, Ohio, Odighizuwa is part of a growing generation of Nigerian-American athletes who have reshaped professional football.

Before reaching the NFL, he spent five seasons at UCLA, recording 120 tackles, 11.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles across 43 appearances, earning First-Team All-Pac-12 honors in the process. The Dallas Cowboys took him in the third round, 75th overall, in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Osa is one of four sons born to Abieyuwa and Peter Odighizuwa, both originally from Nigeria.

In January 2002, his father, then a law student in Virginia, carried out a mass shooting at the Appalachian School of Law, killing three people and wounding several others. Osa was three years old. Peter was convicted and sentenced to multiple life terms in prison.

What followed was a story of extraordinary resilience. Abieyuwa, a nurse known to those close to her as “AB,” relocated the family from Virginia to Brooklyn, then to Ohio, and finally to Portland, Oregon, working long hospital shifts and taking on extra jobs to hold everything together on her own. She didn’t just survive the situation. She outran it.

Her sons followed her lead. Osa’s older brother, Owa Odighizuwa, also reached the NFL as a defensive end, one of the rare cases of two brothers from the same family both making it to the professional level.

From age nine, Owa stepped into a fatherly role for his younger brothers, becoming Osa’s most important mentor long before either of them set foot on an NFL field.

Both brothers attended David Douglas High School in Portland, went on to UCLA, and were eventually drafted into the league.

Today, the family channels that same energy into community work. The Odighizuwa Foundation, led by Abieyuwa as CEO, supports single parents and their children through education and opportunity, nationally and locally.

It was Osa’s encouragement, notably, that helped transform the foundation from a concept into reality.

From Dayton to Dallas to the Bay: Odighizuwa’s Road to the 49ers

In five seasons with the Cowboys, Odighizuwa appeared in 84 games, starting 76, and compiled 216 tackles, 17 sacks, 81 quarterback hits, and 34 tackles for loss.

His quarterback pressure numbers over recent seasons ranked among the top three at the defensive tackle position in the entire NFL, elite company by any standard.

The trade came down to roster overcrowding and cap math in Dallas. San Francisco moved quickly, and smartly.

For the 49ers, it’s a major upgrade. For Odighizuwa, it’s a new chapter, one where a man built by Nigerian heritage, shaped by an unbreakable mother, and refined through five seasons of quiet NFL excellence is stepping into the spotlight he’s long deserved.

Osa Odighizuwa’s story is bigger than football. It’s about where you come from, who raised you, and what you carry with you every time you step onto that field.
