Michael Chiesa parents are not names you will find on a UFC poster or an ESPN graphic.

But the story of Mark Chiesa and Teresa Chiesa is the real reason Mike Chiesa became the fighter he is today.

Mark died two months after watching his son win The Ultimate Fighter. He never got to see him compete in the UFC. But he knew his boy had kept his promise, and for Mark Chiesa, that was enough.

That is the story behind one of MMA’s most emotionally driven fighters.

Not the finishes, not the ESPN career, not the welterweight run, the story behind all of it starts with a family from Spokane, Washington, and a dad who raised his son to never quit.

Who Are Michael Chiesa Parents?

Michael Chiesa, also known as Mike Chiesa, was born on December 7, 1987, in Aurora, Colorado, and grew up in Spokane, Washington.

His father was Mark Chiesa, a proud Italian-American man who worked in car sales and raised his son with a deep sense of loyalty and family.

His stepmother, Teresa Chiesa, is the woman Michael has always called Mom without hesitation.

There is also a biological mother in Michael’s story. Around the age of sixteen, he decided to leave that home and move in with his dad and Teresa, describing the environment there as mentally and physically abusive.

That move changed the entire direction of his life. Living with Mark and Teresa gave him the stability he needed, and it was in that home where a teenage Michael Chiesa first watched UFC and fell completely in love with mixed martial arts.

Mark Chiesa- The Father Who Inspired Everything

Mark Chiesa grew up in Brooklyn, New York, carrying his Italian heritage with pride before eventually settling in Spokane.

His grandfather was originally from Camogli, a small coastal town in northern Italy. By all accounts, Mark was a warm and generous man who loved to travel, had a passion for cooking, and carried a loyalty that defined everything he did.

When Michael told his dad he wanted to pursue MMA as a career, Mark was cautious at first. But he listened, he watched, and he became one of Michael’s most devoted supporters.

That support was about to be tested in a way neither of them could have prepared for.

While Michael was competing on The Ultimate Fighter, Mark Chiesa was fighting his own battle back home in Spokane. He had been diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome, which later developed into leukemia. He was running out of time while his son was fighting for a UFC contract on television.

During the TUF season, Michael received a phone call delivering the weight of that reality. His father’s health was deteriorating fast. Michael could have left the show and gone home. Anyone would have understood.

Instead, he made a promise to his dad. He would stay, he would win the tournament, and he would bring home that UFC contract. For both of them.

Michael Chiesa won The Ultimate Fighter Season 15, defeating Al Iaquinta in the finale in Las Vegas to claim the TUF championship. Mark Chiesa held on long enough to hear that his son had done it. He got that phone call. He knew.

Two months later, Mark passed away from leukemia. He never sat in the stands to watch his son compete in a UFC bout. But his son had kept the promise- and that was everything.

Teresa Chiesa- The Mom Who Never Left His Side

Teresa is Michael’s stepmother, and she is his mom in every sense that matters.

After losing Mark, she became the emotional center of the family and has supported Michael through his entire UFC career, from his days as a UFC lightweight all the way through his welterweight run.

After Michael’s TUF win, Teresa said it simply and perfectly. He had kept a promise to his dad. She was proud of him. He was a great kid with a huge heart.

Her presence in his life also showed up in one of the most talked-about moments of his career.

At a press conference ahead of his 2017 bout against Kevin Lee, Lee commented on Michael’s mother.

Chiesa was over that table immediately. That was not just a fighter reacting to trash talk. That was a son who had lost his dad and leaned on his mom through the hardest years of his life, refusing to let anyone disrespect her.

The Italian Roots and the Family Fire

The Chiesa family story is rooted in Italian heritage, going back generations.

Mark’s grandfather came from Camogli, Italy, and that culture, loyal, family-first, passionate,  shaped the household Michael grew up in.

Michael has always described himself as fully Italian and spoken about those roots with genuine pride.

The competitive fire in the family also predates MMA. Michael’s grandfather, Darrell Triber, was a motorcycle race promoter and a Hall of Famer in fast-track racing. What Michael brings into the octagon was never manufactured. It was inherited.

A Career Built on a Promise

Understanding Michael Chiesa’s family makes his entire UFC career read differently.

His run through the lightweight division against fighters like James Vick, Tony Ferguson, and Beneil Dariush, and later his welterweight campaign against Carlos Condit, Vicente Luque, Kevin Holland, and Sean Brady, was never purely about rankings.

Every time he walked into that octagon, he was carrying something far more personal than a game plan.

His role as an analyst on ESPN and UFC Fight Pass has added a new chapter to his story, proving that the kid from Spokane was always more than a fighter.

He is a student of mixed martial arts and a voice for the sport; his dad first watched with him on a couch in Spokane.

The Family Behind the Maverick

Mike Chiesa earned the nickname “Maverick” inside the UFC octagon. But he has never walked in alone.

Everything, the TUF championship, the UFC career, the ESPN platform- leads back to two people.

A dad who made his son promise not to stop, even while battling cancer. And a mom who cried tears of pride when he kept it.

Mark Chiesa is gone. But every time Michael steps through that octagon door, he takes his dad with him.

That is the real story of the family behind one of MMA’s most compelling fighters.
