Who Are Adam Schefter’s Parents?

Adam Schefter’s parents are Jeff Schefter (father) and Shirley Schefter (mother).

Adam Schefter, the son of Jeff and Shirley Schefter, was born to a Jewish family on December 21, 1966, in Valley Stream, New York.

Both parents have kept an extremely low profile relative to their son’s massive public platform, but their fingerprints are all over who he became.

The clearest window into their relationship came on Mother’s Day, when Adam posted publicly: “Happy Mother’s Day to @shirleyschefter, who raised and molded me.“

Happy Mother's Day to @shirleyschefter, who raised and molded me….to Sharri, who is doing the same for our children….and all the moms out there for doing the most valuable job there is. Happy Mother's Day! pic.twitter.com/Qi4iNhzAwW

Schefter’s father, Jeff Schefter, was a guiding influence in his life. His Jewish heritage was an integral part of his upbringing, instilling in him a strong sense of identity and perseverance.

Adam Schefter Parents & Heritage: Jewish Roots on Long Island

Raised in a Jewish family, Schefter spent his formative years in Bellmore, a suburban town on Long Island.

His upbringing in a tight-knit community played a significant role in shaping his values and work ethic.

Bellmore sits in Nassau County, a middle-class suburb where academic excellence, hard work, and community loyalty weren’t buzzwords but expectations.

For a kid who would go on to attend two elite universities and build a journalism empire, that environment was everything.

Adam’s Jewish identity isn’t just background detail.

When he interviewed NFL running back AJ Dillon about his Jewish upbringing on his podcast, Adam connected personally over their shared heritage, signing off with a warm “L’Shana Tova” for the Jewish New Year.

Early Life: JFK High School and the Making of a Journalist

From a young age, he developed a keen interest in sports and journalism.

He attended John F. Kennedy High School in Bellmore, graduating in June 1985, a public school with a strong academic tradition where driven students found exactly the infrastructure they needed.

After high school, Schefter enrolled at the University of Michigan, where he became an editor at The Michigan Daily.

Then came Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism for his master’s degree, where he simultaneously freelanced for the Chicago Tribune.

His passion for storytelling and analysis became evident early on, setting the foundation for his future career.

Two elite journalism programs, real-world newspaper experience, and an obsessive drive to get things right, none of that happens without a household that taught him what effort actually looks like.

How His Parents Values Show Up in His Career

This is what most articles completely miss.

Schefter’s career traits, the relentless work ethic, the source loyalty, and the accuracy obsession aren’t just professional habits. They’re a direct extension of the household Jeff and Shirley built in Bellmore.

He describes the NFL insider role as a “5 am to 9 pm job and then some.” He is considered the first commentator in broadcasting, in sports, news, or any other genre, to popularize breaking stories in real-time using his phone while live on television.

That kind of obsessive dedication is baked in long before the press credential.

And in June 2024, the story came full circle: Nassau County, where he grew up, honored him by proclaiming June 20 as “Adam Schefter Day.”

The county where Jeff and Shirley raised their son eventually named a day after him.

The Family Adam Built- A Mirror of His Upbringing

The clearest proof of his parents’ influence? The family Adam created for himself.

In 2007, he married Sharri Maio, a widow whose first husband, Joe Maio, was killed in the September 11 attacks, leaving behind a 15-month-old son named Devon. Adam didn’t hesitate.

Adam has proudly and lovingly assumed the role of father in Devon’s life. It wasn’t easy.

He’s admitted the challenge openly: “My wife always had such high expectations. It always was a struggle.” But he stayed. He figured it out.

Devon later chose to attend the University of Michigan, Adam’s own alma mater. That’s a son honoring his father in the most meaningful way possible.

Adam and Sharri also have a daughter, Dylan Schefter, born on October 3, 2008, who is already making her mark in sports media, including covering the Super Bowl for Nickelodeon.

If his children were to describe him, he hopes the words would be: an example, reliable, and trustworthy.

Those are the exact values Jeff and Shirley Schefter passed down in Bellmore decades ago.
