Where did y'all hear this from?
David Montgomery

With one viral tweet, RB David Montgomery sent the NFL world into a frenzy on March 2, 2026.

While the veteran rusher initially questioned the rumors, all signs at the NFL Combine point to a massive shift: the David Montgomery coach era in Detroit is nearing its end.

As the Houston Texans look to finalize a deal for the 28-year-old Knuckles, the league is bracing for a blockbuster.

Montgomery is reportedly the missing piece for DeMeco Ryans, a bell-cow back who can anchor the rush attack and protect C.J. Stroud.

From his dominant 2023 season to this potential trade to Texans, Montgomery’s journey is proof that in the NFL, one phone call can change everything.

For years, Montgomery was the physical identity of the kneecap-biting philosophy.

Alongside Jahmyr Gibbs, he formed the league's most feared two-headed monster.

However, the 2025 season saw a shift. While Jahmyr took over the lightning role, Montgomery’s carries saw a slight dip, leading to rumors during the NFL Combine that the veteran running back wanted a system where he could be the undisputed lead rusher.

The reported trade became reality when General Manager Brad Holmes agreed to the deal.

By moving Montgomery, the Lions addressed their offensive line needs by acquiring Juice Scruggs, while the Texans finally landed the effective rushing threat they’ve lacked.

Campbell noted it was one of the hardest calls he’s had to make, but the salary cap and draft capital made it a strategic necessity for Detroit's long-term tackle depth and roster flexibility.

David Montgomery Coaching History From Iowa State To The Houston Texans

To understand why this transition to Houston is so significant, you have to look at his coaching history.

Montgomery has always been a coach’s favorite because of his no-nonsense approach:

Iowa State Roots: Under Matt Campbell, he finished his Iowa State career sixth in school history for rushing yards, crediting the coach as a mentor who changed his life.
The 2023 Breakout: In his first season with Detroit in 2023, he produced 1,015 yards and a career-high 13 touchdowns, proving he was the perfect veteran running back for a rising contender.
Chicago Bears (Nagy/Eberflus): Despite offensive coordinator changes, he was the first Bears back since 2017 to hit 1,000 yards.

David Montgomery credits Iowa State’s Matt Campbell for building his Knuckles mentality from 2016–2018

Now, in Houston, the play-calling will likely lean heavily on his veteran vision.

DeMeco Ryans is known for a swarm defense, and he wants a running back who can grind out the clock and punish the Green Bay Packers or Washington Commanders in cross-conference showdowns.

Inside The Stats Why The Houston Texans In Exchange For Juice Scruggs Is A Steal

Many analysts on CBS Sports and NFL.com are calling this a bold gamble for Houston.

By giving up a starting offensive lineman like Juice Scruggs, the Texans are betting that Montgomery’s yards per carry will stabilize their rushing attack.

In 2024, Montgomery was a force of nature, recording 10 games with at least 50 yards and a score.

Even when Montgomery suffered minor dings, his efficiency remained elite.

According to Pro Football Focus, his yards after contact and ability to break a tackle ranked him alongside Kenneth Walker III as one of the hardest players to bring down in the offseason.

For a Houston team looking to dominate the AFC, Montgomery is the missing piece of the puzzle.

The 2027 Outlook Can Montgomery Lead Houston To A Super Bowl?

As we look toward the 2026 and 2027 seasons, the expectations are sky-high.

Tom Pelissero reported that Montgomery is energized by the move.

The Texans have a young, explosive roster, but they needed a veteran running back David Montgomery to provide the thump in the red zone.

While Detroit sports fans are mourning the loss of their favorite running back, the Houston Texans are celebrating.

Montgomery’s ability to read blocks, even with a new offensive line, makes him a plug-and-play superstar.

Whether he’s facing the Atlanta Falcons, Denver Broncos, or the Green Bay Packers, Knuckles is ready to prove that he is still the best rusher in the game.
