Roberto De Zerbi’s ethnicity traces back to a tight-knit corner of northern Italy, a father who gave his weekends to a football club for nothing, a family factory that didn’t survive the nineties, and a sixteen-year-old boy who signed his first contract and immediately bought his parents a home

Roberto De Zerbi was born on June 6, 1979, in Brescia, a city in the Lombardy region of northern Italy and it is there, where the foundations of his career were laid.

Having left Olympique de Marseille by mutual consent in February 2026, De Zerbi is currently without a club. But interest in his background remains considerable, and with good reason.

His ethnicity, his upbringing, and the family circumstances that surrounded his early years offer a more complete picture of the coach he became than his tactical record alone ever could. This is the story of where he comes from, and why it still matters.

Roberto De Zerbi’s Nationality and Ethnicity: Born and Raised in Brescia, Italy

Roberto De Zerbi was born on June 6, 1979, in Brescia, a city in the Lombardy region of northern Italy. His nationality is Italian, and his ethnicity is consistent with that, there is no confirmed information suggesting any mixed heritage.

The surname Zerbi has roots in Lombardy, where it is believed to derive from an old Italian word connected to local agricultural life, a name tied to the land and to the region he grew up in.

He was raised in Mompiano, a residential district within Brescia, and the family made a deliberate choice to live close to the Mario Rigamonti Stadium, home ground of Brescia Calcio, placing football at the physical and emotional centre of daily life.

His Parents: The Foundations of a Football Mind

The dominant figure in shaping De Zerbi’s relationship with football was his father, Alfredo, president of the Brescia Club Coordination Centre, where he managed tifos, coordinated supporter groups, and organised travel for away fixtures.

None of it was paid work. By day, Alfredo ran a house-cleaning business selling Rotowash machines across Mompiano and the wider Brescian area. The fan coordination was done purely out of love for a club he gave his weekends to.

His mother has remained entirely out of the spotlight, never named in interviews, never seen in public, but her influence is just as present. Both parents ran the household on the same principles: discipline, hard work, and loyalty. Those values have followed De Zerbi into every dressing room he has managed.

Alfredo has recalled that from the age of two, Roberto was permanently attached to a ball. Matchdays at the Rigamonti were a family ritual, and football was simply the air they breathed. But the family also knew hardship.

When Italy’s economic crisis hit between 1992 and 1994, they were forced to sell a small mat factory they owned. Football, in those lean years, shifted from pastime to purpose.

The day after signing his first professional contract with AC Milan’s academy at sixteen, De Zerbi went directly to a bank and took out a mortgage to buy his parents a house.

The proudest day for both came on February 2, 2008, Roberto’s debut for Brescia Calcio, the club the whole family had followed for as long as anyone could remember.

His Wife Elisa and Their Children

Away from football, De Zerbi is a private man and has worked hard to keep it that way. He is married to Elisa De Zerbi.

The couple have been together for many years and have children who were born in the mid-2000s.

Neither Roberto nor Elisa uses social media, and the identities of their children have been kept away from public view throughout his career.

He has occasionally mentioned his family in passing during interviews, once joking about how he handles transfer interest in players he wants to keep, but he has never offered details about his children’s lives or education. That boundary appears firm, and he keeps it regardless of how prominent his profile becomes.

Occasional claims that his family is connected to that of former Italy international Daniele De Rossi have circulated online over the years. None of these have ever been confirmed by either party, and there is no credible basis for treating them as fact.
