A historic day for the University of Michigan came to pass on January 26, 2024, as it confirmed the appointment of Sherrone Moore as the new head coach. In a historic decision, the university named Sherrone Moore as its very first African-American head coach since its establishment in 1879.

Apart from the media attention surrounding the news, the personal life of Sherrone Moore can reveal a lot about him, as his ethnicity and background played a big role in his professional career path and successes.

Understanding Sherrone Moore better would require getting more insight into his ethnic background and life experiences that

Sherrone Moore Ethnicity: Caribbean Roots, American Identity

Sherrone Moore belongs to the African-American community whose ancestors trace back to the Caribbean country of Trinidad and Tobago. In particular, both of his parents were born in Trinidad and Tobago but immigrated to the US.

Despite having Caribbean origin, Sherrone was raised and made a life in the United States, and his biography is a vivid example of a Black coach striving to become a successful one.

The day of his birth was February 3, 1986, in Derby, Kansas. Sherrone’s father, Michael Moore, was a retired military master sergeant, while his mother, Debra Moore, was a retired nurse.

Both of Sherrone’s parents have dedicated their lives to their motherland and family members. Moreover, the father had returned to service after retirement as a field manager for an oil corporation in Iraq. Clearly, all members of this family had strong character and high commitment.

Religion has been an integral aspect of his life as well. As he appeared in court in April 2026, the very first individual he thanked in public was Jesus.

He was taught by his mother to remain humble, be diligent, and have as much respect for education as he did for athletics.

Moore holds a degree in communication from the University of Oklahoma and, despite the demanding schedule of being a graduate assistant at Louisville, graduated with a master’s degree in sports administration in 2011.

From Derby, Kansas, to Michigan: How Moore Built His Coaching Career

Moore’s rise was not sudden either; rather, it came gradually and patiently. Before he coached any player, he was a player himself.

He played the position of offensive guard for the University of Oklahoma between 2006 and 2007, while he began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Louisville in 2009.

He remained at Central Michigan for three years serving as tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator.

Michigan hired him as tight ends coach in 2018, where he moved up gradually and served as the offensive line coach and later co-offensive coordinator.

During Moore’s tenure at the latter, Michigan’s offensive line emerged as the best in the country by winning the prestigious Joe Moore award.

The move to the NFL by legendary coach Jim Harbaugh from Michigan provided Moore with an opportunity. He was appointed as the 21st head coach of Michigan and received a five-year deal worth $27.5 million.

Moore became the first African American head coach in the history of the University of Michigan football team. He was also the youngest coach to be appointed for the team in the past 50 years at the age of 37.

The appointment of Moore came as a significant achievement regarding diversity and inclusion in college football. As one of the most influential college football conferences, the Big Ten has shown that it is possible to have African Americans at the helm of affairs in such institutions.

Sherrone Moore: Historic Rise at Michigan Wolverines Followed by Controversial Fall

Moore did experience some success during his stint at the University of Michigan. The first one took place in November 2024 when his team shocked everyone by winning against Ohio State as Michigan was a 20.5-point underdog.

The other win took place on December 31, 2024, when the team won against No. 11 Alabama in the ReliaQuest Bowl. It marked the fact that Michigan became the only football program to beat Alabama twice in one year.

However, his stint with the Wolverines ended on a sour note. In December 2025, the University of Michigan terminated Moore as he engaged in an inappropriate relationship with one of his staffers during the investigation period.

As reported by ESPN, Moore received an 18-month sentence of probation and was fined slightly more than $1,000 for the two misdemeanor charges related to the case involving the staffer who lived in his apartment.

He was spared from serving any jail time as Judge Cedric Simpson stated during the sentencing, “I don’t believe, when I look at the entirety of this situation, that incarceration should be appropriate.”

The University of Michigan also appointed former head coach of the University of Utah, Kyle Whittingham, not long after that.

The journey of Sherrone Moore from his roots in Trinidad through Kansas and finally reaching the position of head coach for one of college football’s oldest institutions is indeed a unique one.
